The World Food Programme is exploring potential partnership opportunities with Geo Pomona Waste Management, focusing on developing scalable waste management solutions for communities across the country.

Speaking after touring the Geo Pomona facilities in Harare yesterday, WFP Zimbabwe Head of External Relations, Ms Ifeoma Garba, said the organisation’s visit was aimed at assessing prospects for collaboration on sustainable waste solutions.

“The key reason why we are here today is to look into the possibilities of how we are going to be able to partner with Geo Pomona in the area of waste management, particularly in how we transform waste into energy and waste into wealth,” she said.

“We have done a few programmes in the past in urban areas on waste‑related activities, but not at the scale that has been achieved here.

Geo Pomona Waste Management CEO and executive chairman, Dr Dilesh Nguwaya, welcomed the interest from WFP, saying the facility was increasingly attracting international attention.

“So, we are looking at whether we will be able to work with Geo Pomona to do something scalable and improve livelihoods while improving the environment and, of course, making our communities much safer.”

Ms Garba described the facility as “magnificent”, highlighting its advanced infrastructure and planning.

“We have been through the tour and this is, for lack of a better word, magnificent,” she said. “It just shows that if we put our minds to it, there is nothing that can stop us. “It is a state‑of‑the‑art facility — one of its kind in the region.”

Ms Garba added that the project demonstrated local capacity and innovation. “I don’t think Zimbabwe does enough in promoting the impressive things it has as a country, and Geo Pomona is certainly a good starting point,” she said. “We need to market ourselves more. This project was done by Zimbabweans, so it is Africa for Africa, and we should be proud of it.”

Geo Pomona Waste Management CEO and executive chairman, Dr Dilesh Nguwaya, welcomed the interest from WFP, saying the facility was increasingly attracting international attention.

“I’m very happy that they are coming to partner with Geo Pomona Waste Management,” he said.

Dr Nguwaya revealed that the International Solid Waste Association (ISWA), in partnership with Geo Pomona, will host an international conference in Zimbabwe.

“The place is now a centre of attraction, meaning that we are meeting international standards in terms of how we manage our waste. They are coming here to find out how we can collaborate.”

Meanwhile, Dr Nguwaya revealed that the International Solid Waste Association (ISWA), in partnership with Geo Pomona, will host an international conference in Zimbabwe.

“We are going to host other countries for the Africa region and Geo Pomona is a major partner,” he said.

“We are putting our country on the map in terms of waste management.”

He added that organisations were being encouraged to join ISWA to benefit from knowledge‑sharing on environmental issues.

“We are encouraging other organisations to come and join ISWA so that they can learn a lot about environmental issues, from waste management to climate change,” said Dr Nguwaya.
