HARARE Provincial Affairs and Devolution Minister Senator Charles Tawengwa has commended Zimbabwe Youth in Tourism for mobilising young people from across the country to participate in an 800km walkathon from Harare to Victoria Falls to raise awareness on wetlands conservation.

In a speech delivered on his behalf by his ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Mr Cosmas Chiringa, at the official send-off yesterday, Sen Tawengwa said the initiative demonstrated the youths’ deep commitment to environmental protection and national development.

“This initiative not only raises awareness about wetland conservation but also empowers youths to take active roles in protecting our natural heritage,” he said.

“As Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution for Harare Metropolitan Province, I want to express my full support for this noble cause.

“Sending off our youths on this walk signifies our belief in their leadership and dedication to safeguarding our environment.”

Sen Tawengwa praised the participants as patriotic young leaders whose efforts reflect their desire for a sustainable future.

He said the walkathon highlights the critical need to engage young people in environmental programmes such as wetland preservation and income-generating eco-projects.

“Harare is home to several important wetlands, including Mukuvisi Woodlands, Cleveland Dam and Monavale Vlei .

“Wetlands are vital ecosystems that sustain life on earth.

“They offer critical benefits such as water filtration, flood control and habitat preservation for countless species.

The walkathon coincides with preparations for the 15th Meeting of the Conference of the Contracting Parties (COP15) to the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands, which Zimbabwe will host in Victoria Falls from July 23 to 31.

“Your journey, which started today and continues until COP15, plays an important role in raising awareness and promoting action for wetland conservation across the country,” he said.

Zimbabwe Youth Council chief executive officer, Mr Brian Nyagwande, also applauded the initiative, describing it as a clear demonstration of unity and purpose among Zimbabwean youths.

He added that the Ministry of Youth Empowerment, Development and Vocational Training has pledged full support for the walkathon.

Zimbabwe Youth in Tourism director-general, Mr Stewart Mutizwa, said the walkathon’s goals include raising awareness on the importance of wetlands, highlighting the threats they face and reinforcing Zimbabwe’s commitment to the Ramsar Convention.
