Zanu PF politician Wadyajena vying for appointment as ZACC commissioner

HARARE – Former Zanu PF legislator for Gokwe-Nembudziya, Mayor Justice Wadyajena has been shortlisted among candidates set for public interviews next Thursday to choose persons who shall constitute the next group of Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) commissioners.

This was despite his name having been mired in acts of alleged corruption, most prominently the 2022 COTTCO scandal that saw the larger than life politician accused of fraud and money laundering while working in cahoots with some bosses of the government entity.

They were accused of fleecing COTTCO of millions of US dollars through creating false invoices for the supply of bale ties to the state company.

The case fizzled out mysteriously after it was withdrawn before plea by the state.

Despite his integrity being put to test in such inglorious manner, Wadyajena was still considered good enough to form a drawn list of known public persons set for the ZACC interviews.

Parliament published the names of the 47 shortlisted candidates, a decent number being persons affiliated to Zanu PF.

Among some of the candidates set for interviews is Tongai Matutu, Gabriel Chaibva –  a perennial interviewee for commissions, as well as ex-Zanu PF MPs Berita Chikwama, Zalerah Makari and Kindness Paradza.

Former Zimbabwe Electoral Commission commissioner Qhubani Moyo also wants a dance with the anti-graft body.

Parliament said it received an overwhelming 145 nominations for possible appointments to serve ZACC as commissioners.

Vacancies in the commission arose following the expiry of the term of office for all sitting officers this year.

Every five years, the parliament’s Committee on Standing Rules and Orders selects and submits 12 nominees to the President, who then appoints eight to the commission. The President also consults the committee to choose the chairperson.

With the eight ordinary members sworn in 2019, their terms ended as the posts were advertised in August.

ZACC chair Michael Reza’s term will however not be affected, as he was appointed in March this year to replace Justice Loice Mutanda-Moyo, the new Prosecutor General.
