Once again Vigil activists met outside the Zimbabwe Embassy in London to continue our protest against the human rights abuse and lack of democracy in Zimbabwe perpetrated by ZANU PF, the ruling regime. Thanks to those who came today: Jonathan Kariwo, Charity Mahuni, Chantelle Manyande, Philip Maponga, Julius Mutyambizi-Dewa, Noble Mwashita, Samantha Pfupajena, Geraldine Takundwa, Ephraim Tapa and Tatenda Tsumba. Vigil activists were pleased to welcome a long-standing activist, Julius Mutyambizi-Dewa. Addressing activists, Julius decried the absence of a serious opposition movement in Zimbabwe whilst suggesting that Zimbabwe always appears to do well under a unity government, citing the early 80s unity government followed by 1987 unity with Joshua Nkomo’s ZAPU and then the 2009-2013 unity with Morgan Tsvangirai’s MDC party.

Julius further observed that under the unitary ZANU PF rule, Zimbabwe’s economic and social condition always regressed. He called for all those concerned about Zimbabwe to coalesce around the Zimbabwe Vigil and develop an alternative program for Zimbabwe, which would give the ZANU PF regime a good run for its money, for the good of the country.

As news spread about the demise of the exiled war veteran cum activist, Blessed Geza (Cde Bompshell) in South Africa, vigil activists, whilst being saddened, noted that fighting ED Mnangagwa’s military regime was much more difficult than Mugabe’s police state. Faced with live ammunition and firearms, civil society had been driven underground, opposition destroyed, and masses silenced.

For this reason, the diaspora activist community found itself with a heavy responsibility of keeping the fire burning, standing in the gap, and giving a voice to those the downtrodden masses in Zimbabwe.

Events and Notices:

  • Next Vigil meeting outside the Zimbabwe Embassy. Saturday 21st February from 2 – 5 pm. We meet on the first and third Saturdays of every month. On other Saturdays the virtual Vigil will run.
  • The Restoration of Human Rights in Zimbabwe (ROHR) is the Vigil’s partner organisation based in Zimbabwe. ROHR grew out of the need for the Vigil to have an organisation on the ground in Zimbabwe which reflected the Vigil’s mission statement in a practical way. ROHR in the UK actively fundraises through membership subscriptions, events, sales etc to support the activities of ROHR in Zimbabwe.
  • The Vigil’s book ‘Zimbabwe Emergency’ is based on our weekly diaries. It records how events in Zimbabwe have unfolded as seen by the diaspora in the UK. It chronicles the economic disintegration, violence, growing oppression and political manoeuvring – and the tragic human cost involved. It is available at the Vigil. All proceeds go to the Vigil and our sister organisation the Restoration of Human Rights in Zimbabwe’s work in Zimbabwe. The book is also available from Amazon.
