2 dead as train ploughs into Honda Fit at Harare railway crossing

HARARE – Two people were killed when a train ploughed into a vehicle at a railway crossing in Harare on Tuesday morning.

The driver of a Honda Fit vehicle drove into the path of the train at a railway level crossing on Chiremba Road near OK-Mart.

The accident caused travelling chaos for morning commuters after the train came to a stop, blocking the road.

A police spokesman said: “Two people sadly died in the accident. Police are currently working with other emergency service providers to re-open the road.

“Police appeals to all motorists who use Chiremba Road to connect to Robert Mugabe Road to find alternative routes.”

The railway crossing has traffic lights which, when functioning, should turn red when a train is approaching. The lights have not worked for several years.
