2 die during stampede after Winky D performance at Castle Tankard

HARARE – Two people were killed and several others injured during a “stampede” at the Castle Tankard in Harare on Saturday night, police said.

Thomas Maarira, 43, and Emilia Makoga, 44, both of Hatcliffe, died during a stampede at the end of a performance by the singer, Winky D.

National police spokesman Paul Nyathi said: “The regrettable incident occurred while people were making their way out of the Borrowdale Race Course.”

Nyathi said the incident was still under investigation.

The Castle Tankard, organised by beer maker Delta Beverages, is Zimbabwe’s premier race horsing event held annually.

Saturday’s event featured musical performances from Alick Macheso, Enzo Ishall and Winky D.

In a statement, Delta said it was “saddened by reports of fatalities and injuries that occurred at the close of the very successful hosting of the Castle Tankard.”
