6 school children killed, 34 injured in Nyanga bus crash

HARARE – Six school children were killed and 34 others injured when a Tynwald High School bus overturned near the Pine Tree Hotel on the Rusape-Nyanga Road on Friday night.

Police said the driver Machimbidzofa Chamunorwa was speeding and failed to negotiate a bend.

The bus carrying 41 students and four teachers was heading to Nyanga from Harare.

Police named the dead as Anesuishe Hove, 14, Beyonce Guyo, 15, Anita Manyuka, 16, Destiny Dziva, 14, Kimberly Tarisai Mutusva, 15, and the only boy, Craig Matanhire.

A police report of the accident said: “Upon reaching the 75km peg at a sharp curve, Chamunorwa failed to negotiate the bend. The bus veered off the road to the left and rolled several times on a steep slope.

“In the process, the bus threw out some passengers, injuring 34 of them and killing five on the spot. The bus landed on its roof. The injured passengers were ferried to Nyanga District Hospital, where one died upon admission, and Victoria Chitepo Provincial Hospital where they were admitted.”
