THERE has been an increase in the number of cases of women aborting, usually in unsafe conditions, and newly-born babies being dumped in the Hopley and Southlea Park areas of Harare.
This has attracted the attention of the police who believe that drug and substance abuse could be a key trigger to the increasing number of newly-born babies being dumped in these two areas.
A number of women are being abused and raped by men, the majority of whom would be high on drugs, the police have noted.
Most of these men would have used sex-enhancing drugs.
Some of these criminals are using the cemetery in the area as their base where they rape women, especially during the night.
Addressing residents during a drugs and substances abuse awareness campaign, the Officer Commanding Mbare District, Chief Superintendent Runwell Chipfurutse, urged members of the public to respect the sanctity of life and protect future generations.
“We have joined hands, together with local authorities, including the Member of Parliament for Harare South, Honourable Trymore Kanopula,” said Chief Supt Chipfurutse.
“We cannot fold our hands and watch the future leaders of this country being destroyed through abortions, baby dumping and murder.
“Women are being raped and sexually abused by men who abuse some drugs.
“These men use sex-enhancers, misbehave and end up causing unwanted pregnancies.
“Some abusers are using the cemetery as their nest for raping women passing through by during the night.”
He added:
“Let us join hands in fighting this menace and reduce the number of people being taken to Glenville Cemetery.
“Some abusers have taken the cemetery as their nest for raping women passing through it during the night.”
He said there has also been an increase in people, in drunken state, who are being knocked down by cars in the area.
“We even have our youths crossing roads while playing music on their cellphones, wearing some headsets.
“Let us avoid using headphones and walking during the night to preserve our lives.
“Schools are now about to open, let us accompany our children to cross the road and avoid road traffic accidents.”
Kanopula commended the police leadership in Harare South, including Commissioner Maxwell Chikunguru, for the impact the force is having on the community.
“To be honest, this is the first time an officer commanding district has visited us here.
“We are now witnessing arrests and convictions. Some criminals, who were hiding in Harare South, are being dealt with.
“If you have complaints, let us sit together, discuss and see how best the police will deal with the criminals.
“Vose vaibvutira vanhu zvinhu zvavo mota dzichifamba vakasungwa.
:Another drug lord was also arrested and we want to thank police for this.”
