Bulawayo – Bulawayo Chiefs have written their own club history by clinching the Chibuku Super Cup trophy after beating Herentals 1-0 in a final that was played at Barbourfields Stadium this Sunday.
The surprise winners got their all-important goal through Arthur Diego Musiyiwa’s screamer outside the box 37 minutes into the match.
Herentals failed to find a response to that with the score line remaining the same up to full time.
The two sides were playing in the final for the first time since joining Zimbabwe’s topflight football few seasons ago.
For their achievement, Chiefs pocket US$75 000 with the runners up getting US$50 000 consolation.
Both amounts will be paid their prize monies in local currency at the prevailing official rate.
By winning the country’s premier knock-out competition, Chiefs get a ticket to represent the country in CAF Confederation Cup tournament next season.
However, their participation will be based on whether CAF lifts the international ban on the country before the competition starts.
The Chibuku Super Cup final drew the curtain on a less inspiring Zimbabwe premier football season that saw giants Caps United, Dynamos and Highlanders fail to impress.
