THE Chinhoyi Provincial Heroes Acre, renowned for the 1966 Seven Heroes battle, is set to undergo a significant upgrade, with the first phase expected to be completed within 21 days.

The initiative aims to honour the seven freedom fighters who bravely faced Rhodesian forces during the pivotal battle on April 28, 1966.

The heroes commemorated at the site include Christopher Chatambudza, Simon Chingozha, Godwin Dube (also known as Godfrey Manyerenyere), Chubby Sawana, Arthur Maramba, David Guzuzu and Swazini Ndlovu (also known as Godfrey Dube).

They are joined by other national figures, including the late Dendera King, Simon Chimbetu.

The upgrade began yesterday, executed by Zim-China Wanjin Agriculture Development, a company affiliated with the Zimbabwe Defence Forces (ZDF).

The ZDF is partnering with various organisations to ensure the project’s success.

At a ground-breaking ceremony attended by Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution Marian Chombo, Lieutenant Colonel Tichaona Masanganise provided an overview of the project.

He said the facelift will occur in three phases.

The first phase will include the construction of a perimeter wall, installation of four 5 000-litre water tanks, improved lighting, a guard room and revamped ablution facilities.

“This first phase will be completed in the next 21 days, and we anticipate that Defence Minister (Oppah Muchinguri-Kashiri) or one of our generals will officially hand over the facilities once completed,” said Lt Col Masanganise.

He said the construction team was committed to timely completion, and from yesterday until the time of handover of the first phase projects to the Government, the contractor will be doing all the maintenance works, including grass cutting, landscaping, and cleaning of toilets.

The second phase will focus on constructing a parlour and refurbishing the Seven Heroes Monument, while the third phase will upgrade a 40-hectare military cemetery adjacent to the shrine.
