Girl, 8, gives birth, becomes country’s youngest mom ever

BINDURA – The 8-year-old girl, who fell pregnant last year after being raped allegedly by two 17-year-old boys, has given birth to a baby girl, becoming the country’s youngest mother ever.

The girl, who cannot be named on ethical reasons, delivered through a Caesarean section at Bindura Provincial Hospital.

A government gynaecologist has reportedly been closely monitoring the young mother.

Bindura Hospital Superintendent, Dr Budirirai Gwagwa told the state media that both mother and child are in stable condition.

“The patient was taken to theatre and around 0900hrs a Caesarean section was performed, and she delivered a baby girl.

“Currently, she is stable and receiving post-op care and the baby is stable receiving neo-natal care,” he said.

The girl will be turned over to the Social Welfare Department’s care after being discharged.

The former Kambira Primary School pupil dropped out of learning when she fell pregnant from incidents allegedly by two 17-year-old boys who are understood to be her brothers from the same farm. The two have been arrested.

Her pregnancy, a rare thing among minors as young as 8, was discovered by school authorities who took her for a medical check up.

She sadly joins a growing number of young minors who have become pregnant as a result of sexual exploitation by older persons.

Last year, a 9-year-old Tsholotsho girl became the country’s youngest mother after also giving birth to a child she conceived when she had sex with a 13-year-old relative.
