HARARE — President Emmerson Mnangagwa has promoted his son and chief bodyguard to the sixth highest rank in the Zimbabwe National Army.
Sean Mnangagwa, 36, was elevated from Major to Lieutenant Colonel at an investiture ceremony on Wednesday, one of nine soldiers to receive similar promotions.
“I wish to extend my sincere gratitude to the Commander-in-Chief for this recognition. I have served in the army for 16 years, and this means more to me than words can express,” Sean told journalists after the ceremony.
Army administration chief Brigadier General Christopher Rangwana said the promotions were merit-based.
“These officers have been promoted after special recognition of their dedication to protecting this country. It is on merit and competence, and we expect them to remain loyal and patriotic at all times,” Rangwana said.
Sean, a twin born of Mnangagwa’s marriage to First Lady Auxillia Mnangagwa, has taken over duties as his father’s head of security while remaining a serving soldier.
