Robbers snatch US$580,000 in raid on Kwekwe petrol station

HARARE – Armed robbers made off with more than half-a-million United States dollars in a midnight raid on a Kwekwe petrol station, police said.

Police were called to Rockodox Service Station on Parson Road in the Midlands town following reports of an armed robbery.

Investigators believe up to 12 men were involved in the raid at about 1AM on Monday.

Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi, the national police spokesman, said the robbers had at least two guns – an AK 47 rifle and a pistol.

“They tied the hands and legs of two security guards who were on duty with shoe laces before stealing a Dewalt drilling machine, US$582,540 and R58,430 cash which was in a table drawer and Chubb safe,” Nyathi said.

Police have appealed for the public’s help to identify the robbers.
