SENATE president Cde Mabel Chinomona on Wednesday night presented a paper on Zimbabwe’s position on issues affecting female parliamentarians during the Forum of Women Parliamentarians at the 152nd Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary union being held in Istanbul, Türkiye.

The IPU Assembly began on Tuesday and will end on Sunday.

“She articulated issues affecting female parliamentarians and and their role in parliamentary processes. Honourable Chinomona enunciated Zimbabwe’s position during the discussion on the draft resolution on the role of parliamentarians in establishing robust post-conflict management mechanisms and restoring a just and lasting peace,” read the statement.

“In this regard, Hon Chinomona illuminated Parliament of Zimbabwe’s experiences, indicating that lasting peace is not achieved by ending conflict alone, but by justice, inclusion and the meaningful participation of often excluded voices—especially women and youth.

“Furthermore, she highlighted that women parliamentarians are quintessential in the peace processes as their exclusion risks weakening sustainable recovery and stability. Accordingly, she opined that women and girls are not only beneficiaries of peace but essential architects of it.”

Cde Chinomona added that Zimbabwe’s Parliament was strengthening conflict management and monitoring peace-building efforts, advancing protection of women from gender-based violence through enforcement and survivor support services aligned within the aegis of Zimbabwe National Gender Policy (2025–2030), as well as placing peace and good governance at the centre of development under the Zimbabwe National Development Strategy 2 (2026–2030).

“Through initiatives such as the Zimbabwe Women’s Parliamentary Caucus, cooperation on UN Security Council Resolution 1325, and a focus on inclusive law-making and oversight, Parliaments sustain peace by building trust, preventing relapse into conflict, and strengthening democracy, accountability, and civic engagement,” read the statement.
