United States warns of imminent terrorist attack in Sandton

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa – The United States on Wednesday warned of an imminent terrorist attack targeting South Africa’s plush neighbourhood of Sandton which is frequented by foreign tourists.

Often referred to as “Africa’s richest square mile”, Sandton is home to exclusive hotels, restaurants, nightclubs and many international companies have their headquarters there.

In an alert about a “possible terrorist attack”, the United States embassy in Pretoria said: “The U.S. government has received information that terrorists may be planning to conduct an attack an attack targeting large gatherings of people at an unspecified location in the greater Sandton area of Johannesburg, South Africa, on October 29.

“There is no further information regarding the timing, method, or target of the potential attack.”

The embassy said its staff had been advised to “avoid crowds of people and other large gatherings in the greater Sandton area during the weekend of 29-30 October 2022.”
