Zimbabwe defender Garananga joins Danish side Copenhagen

COPENHAGEN, Denmark – Zimbabwe international Munashe Garananga has joined Denmark top flight side Denmark on a four-year contract from Belgian club KV Mechelen.

The 23-year-old central defender was unveiled as a Copenhagen player on Tuesday.

Copenhagen Sporting director Sune Smith-Nielsen said: “We are bringing in a player who has performed incredibly strongly in the Belgian league and who has drawn attention to himself after taking some big steps in a short time.

“The scouting team led by Andreas Hintze has done their job well, and they have followed Munashe for a long time. It has been obvious that we have been missing a player for this position, and we have now covered that with the approach of Munashe.”

The transfer fee is believed to be in the region of €4 million (about $4.7 million) – a bit of good business for Mechelen who paid just US$400,000 to sign him from Sheriff of Moldova last year.

“We already knew this winter that Munashe would take a step quickly,” KV Mechelen sporting director Tim Matthys said.

He added: “When you attract a boy with a lot of potential, you know that there will come a certain moment when he will spread his wings. It’s not really surprising that it comes so quickly. I knew that if Munashe would adapt quickly, he would very quickly attract the interest of bigger clubs. That quickly became clear when he played a few matches for us.

“I’m very proud of Munashe that he has been able to take this step and am happy that we have been able to give him a stage to show his talent. I wish him the best of luck.”

Garananga joined Mechelen from Sheriff in 2023, and played just 16 games for them.

Before Sheriff, Garananga played for Dynamo Brest in Belarus having joined them from Ubuntu Cape Town where he played in the youth side.
